Velocity Semiconductor Appoints Focus EDL As U.K. Distributor
PLEASANTON, CA – May 18, 2004 - Velocity Semiconductor today announced Focus EDL to be the exclusive U.K. representative and distributor for their unique 32-bit network-enabled microcontroller products. The family, named Typhoon™, offers 32-bit performance at 8-bit processor pricing and targets embedded applications requiring controller support and Ethernet connectivity. The processor is based on Digital Communications Technology’s (DCT™) patented RISC CPU core, Lightfoot™, which is C, Java™ and Assembly cross-compatible.
The 32-bit RISC core operates with an 8-bit instruction path. This, combined with a 3-stage pipeline, dual-stack design, allows operation at one instruction per clock cycle, delivering 60 MIPs at 60 MHz operation.
This feature-rich MCU comes with a 10/100 Ethernet MAC and DMA controller plus many other on-chip peripherals, some of which include an external memory controller, two UARTs, three SPI ports and a configurable 8- or 32-bit external memory bus.
A soft-byte code instruction set, allows Java and .NET™-based systems to run more efficiently, reducing memory space by up to ten times and improving Java performance compared to equivalent RISC interpreters. The optimized system architecture enables compiled C code to be up to eight times smaller and, additionally, the overall improved efficiency allows the application and run-time code to be reduced by up to five times. This significantly reduces memory overhead plus board space and costs.
Target applications include security systems, industrial control, utility metering, retail POS, smart card and ATM terminals. Current applications utilizing Velocity’s technology include access control, alarm systems, security monitoring and GPRS routers. A feature-loaded development kit is available at $399 and includes an evaluation board, software development kit and royalty-free software including a 32-bit ANSI C-compiler, TCP/IP stack, Java-class file translator with Java compatible libraries, and an RTOS.
Additionally, various credit-card sized modules have been developed to mount onto customer-developed motherboards to offer reduced time-to-market and lower recurring costs. With an on-board processor, 1MB of Flash and SRAM, two RS232 ports and two SPI ports, four timers/counters and status and link status LEDs, the modules carry either one or two RJ-45 Ethernet connectors or an RJ-45 and an USB1.1 slave or host port. Additionally, a module has been developed with a CompactFlash interface enabling systems that are targeting wireless network connectivity.
